I ask how? My imagination commands me:
Imagine that the Stars are bending in their milky orbit.
Imagine that the
Constellations
Are playing a new game of noughts and crosses.
Imagine that the markings in the Valley of the Queens
Have been smeared by the changing winds.
Pretend that the wrinkly lines of Neptune’s sea
Zigzag in a new direction.
Yet my brain slurs: Love has murdered time. So is it the Mad Hatter?
You stink of love’s intoxicated memories and its fat fumes of mercury!
And as they eat us up love feeds us fatter.
I call for why? The aches of Reason:
“The way you were unfolded like a caterpillar released
From its cocoon” does not tell you that the
“Laws of Life”
Have changed as you know them. You are just an orbit in that -evolutionary axis-.
Hums my heart in retaliation: you were opened up when you were shut tight like Pandora’s box.
No-one was meant to see you that way.
But the child in me says:
Man cannot admire the philosopher
Who to dissect the very air he lists.
For Love knights the enlightened minister
And makes the ambitious scientist foolish.
Much rather Love makes the common man wise
Who well knows not to count the things most rare.
The poet tries to make them swell and rise
And hangs his ornaments upon the air.
